Sue Cox: I am passionate about recovery, about understanding what makes us human, and about the extraordinary potential in people who have often been written off. As Founder and Director of SMART-UK, I have taught more than 31,000 healthcare professionals, bringing together Chinese medicine, neuroscience and over fifty years of lived experience in recovery. Receiving an OBE for my work in the prison system was an unexpected honour. Seeing people rediscover their worth remains my greatest reward. I am also Co-Founder of Survivors Voice – Europe, an international community of people who experienced childhood abuse by Catholic clergy. Speaking out has taught me much about courage, belonging and the power of standing together. I am a recovered alcoholic, addict and self-harmer — and, thankfully, a recovered Catholic! An atheist and humanist with a touch of Zen, I am also a mother of six, a grandmother and happily married to my second husband. My list of things I still want to do shows no sign of getting shorter.
